In 1852, ten years after the opening of the Royal Pump Room, there were calls to provide the popular Magnesia Well with a suitable pump room. The well lay on that part of the Stray, detached from the main area, known as “Bogs Field”, due to the marshy nature of the ground. It was reached by means of a footpath from the Old Sulphur Well across land held by the Vicar of Pannal. Little by little, improvements were made to the area and in 1858 a Gothic pump room was built for the Magnesia Well with an outside tap, similar to those provided at the Royal Pump Room, St John’s and Tewit Wells.
