The six year period between the openings of the Royal Baths and the Kursaal was one which saw Harrogate meet, and better, all continental rivals, and the town adopted the slogan that Harrogate was the world’s greatest spa.
The confidence felt by the Corporation was shared by hoteliers and lodging house keepers who between 1870 and 1900 increased the town’s accommodation substantially and between 1900 and 1903 two modern super-hotels, the Majestic and the Grand, were opened to public acclaim and raised standards of accommodation in Harrogate to rival those of any resort, anywhere.
