30. SUN PAVILION & COLONADE

The council embarked on a phased programme of works in the Valley Gardens. Part one was for the building of a covered colonnade and ‘Sun Pavilion’; part two consisted of a new Royal Pump Room situated between the new colonnade and the Old Sulphur Well; and part three connected the Sun Pavilion with the Royal Bath Hospital, and provided a further visitor attraction in the form of an aviary. Eventually, the first completed stage of the scheme was opened in 1933 by the Prince of Wales’ physician, Lord Horder. Stages two and three were never built however the abandonment of the Valley Gardens scheme did not signal the end of the Council’s intention to improve Harrogate’s spa facilities.
